Artist Statement

My art illustrates the idea that thoughts and emotions are as real as the tangible objects around us, with incredibly potent impact on our lives.  My paintings often focus on lone figures, rudimentary objects, and simple environments.  Multiple images of a single figure may be used to communicate the individual undergoing a process through time or perception, experiencing ambivalence, etc.  The use of high contrast between light and shadow not only provides dramatic interest to the composition, but also expresses the limits of our perceptions.  Thoughts can be obstacles, sources of power, friends and enemies.  Time and the Laws of Nature have no real bearing on these elements.  Ultimately, I seek to use realistic forms to communicate the fundamentally irrational experience of being human.
